You glanced down at the confectionary blankly.
Hermione’s eyes widened. “Wait, No! You don’t think?” Her hand went to her mouth
“I’m afraid so.” Harry replied forlornly.
Clutching the frog in your hand, you glared down at the trio. “Someone care to elaborate?”

The group was silent, each one of them awkwardly looking to the other. You waited silently, nibbling the frog and dreading what you what you were about to hear.
Obviously noticing that the boys weren’t going to elaborate further Hermione answered. “Well, if it is what it looks like, though it might not be… Draco could quite possibly, ermm…”
“He likes you, thinks you’re hot or whatever.” Ron added.
You were silent for a moment, remaining bit of chocolate halfway up to your mouth.
Ron grimaced. “I think she’s having a stroke, don’t blame her really, I would too if-“
You began to laugh, body quivering as the high pitched sound startled a small group of first years nearby. “You don’t seriously think that arrogant git likes me do you? He hates me; he tipped snails on me and insulted me the whole potions lesson. Not to mention the fact that he sent a paper airplane hurtling towards me before class,” You shook your head. “Oh and in transfiguration this morning when he tried to turn my ferret into a roll of toilet paper.”

You sat in silence for a moment longer, as they weighed the facts. The silence was killing you, their theory was completely and utterly ridiculous. Why the hell would Draco like you? Sure, you admitted that in first year you sat with him and his group on the train, but that was because you didn’t know better. You were just an excited half blood who had no preferences into which house you were put into. Your mother had been a proud Ravenclaw and your father a proud Slytherin, and your older brother a Gryffindor. From what you had witnessed neither blood status nor house made any difference to the witch or wizard. Gazing into the fire you recalled the first time you had met Draco.

The train left kings cross station, the waving and smiling figures of your parents getting smaller by the minute. When you could no longer see anything but rows upon rows of trees, you made your way down the length of the train, searching for a spare seat. You traveled past the compartments first, solemnly realizing they were all almost bursting with mischievous groups of friends, re uniting after the holidays. One of them was only occupied by two boys, your age. One with flaming red hair, the other with dark hair that stuck up slightly. You were about to enter when you decided against it, you didn’t want to impose on anyone. So you continued to travel down the train until you came to a large open area.

There was only one seat spare here, hesitantly you approached, eyes averted from the group that sat around it.
“E-excuse me, do you mind if I sit there? It’s just that there aren’t any seats and I-“
A boy with silvery blond hair and a permanent smirk looked up. “Depends, what’s your name?”
You met his eyes, frowning slightly. “_______ _______.”
“Your father works with mine at the ministry, take a seat,” He held out a hand. “I’m Draco, Draco Malfoy. This is Crabbe and Goyle.” He gestured to two large intimidating boys.
You smiled in greeting and took a seat beside Draco. He asked you about what house you were hoping for and when you told him you didn’t care he tried to convince you that Slytherin was the only house for you. You had liked him, he was a little blunt, and came across a little spoilt but you knew where you stood with him.

“I don’t know ____.” You were brought back to the present by Hermione’s voice.
You blinked. “You’re all serious about this aren’t you?”
Harry shrugged. “All the evidence points that way, he sticks up for you in potions, returns your book to you when you drop it, acknowledges your presence with a smile, when you entered the great hall for lunch-“
“I’d call it more of a sneer then a smile.” You put in.
Hermione patted you on the leg. “Deny it all you want _____, Draco likes you.”

“There you are!” You were interrupted by a panting second year girl, who you vaguely remembered to be a fangirl of Draco, despite the fact she was a Gryffindor.
Hermione wrinkled her nose up, obviously holding some disdain for this girl. The girl approached you with a bright smile; she had some bright pink lipstick on her teeth.
“______, I’ve been running around the whole castle trying to find you.” You didn’t know how she knew your name.
Ron snickered. “You didn’t check the common room first? Usually that’s the place people hang ou-“
She glared at him like he was a piece of gum on the bottom of her shoe. “Draco Malfoy himself sent me to get you!” She began to swoon, obviously expecting you to do the same.
You turned away. “I’d rather be crucio’d and then be given the dementors kiss.”
The girl stared at you stunned, mouth agape. Harry and Ron smirked; they always seemed to find your openness amusing.
“H-he said that if you didn’t want to come to tell you that he has Jolly Jim.”
You fell off your chair, hitting the ground hard, before anyone could come to your aid you jumped up. “NO! NOT JOLLY JIM!” your shouts echoed throughout the common room. “That evil slime ball.” Before anyone could say anything you grabbed the girl by the wrist and tugged her out of the common room.

Your back hurt from the fall but you put it out of your mind, you had to save Jolly Jim before Draco succeed in his earlier endeavor, to turn him into toilet paper. As you descended the stairs you glared at the girl, who looked mortified by your behavior. “Where is he?”
She turned bright red. “Th-the lake, now let me go.”
You did as she asked and sprinted to the lake, heart racing. If anything happened to your ferret you would never forgive yourself. As you exited the castle you could make out the form of Draco, clutching a small ball of light brown fur to his chest.
You bared your teeth. “Don’t worry Jim, I’m coming.”
Draco turned around, his expression blank. You could see that Jim was struggling to escape from his grasp.

“I knew you probably wouldn’t come if I didn’t give you a reason.”
“Give him back to me, you-“
He gently placed the quivering rodent back in your hands. “Hear me out before you leave.”
You scoffed, cuddling Jolly Jim lovingly. “Why? So you can turn Jim here into toilet paper? Or insult me, maybe try to hex me?”
He shook his head, blue eyes gazing at you. “Why do you think so poorly of me _____? I was nothing but welcoming to you from the moment we first met.”
You narrowed your eyes. “Until I was placed in Gryffindor then you turned your nose up at me.”
“It was you who turned your nose up at me. You became friends with Potter, Weasley and that know it all mudblood, and all of a sudden it was as if I was the vilest thing you had ever come across.”
“You were, you are.”
Hurt crossed his features, as he gazed out over the lake. “I have always looked out for you, you know. No matter what, always.”
You stroked Jim’s soft fur. “You lie Draco, you’ve done nothing but try and make my life hell.”
“I wish I could do that, it would make mine a whole lot easier. I wouldn’t be forced to hide my real feelings from everyone, go out with girls that I have no interest in,” His eyes became tear filled. “Watch you as you throw yourself at boys who only want you for your body.”
You looked down at your feet, frown on your face. “Even if this is all true Draco, I don’t like you. I stand by my remarks from potions earlier today.” With that you walked away, leaving him to watch the sunset alone.
Yes, your ferret is named Jolly Jim, no, i'm not sorry.
